Today, Carers NSW released the full results from the 2024 National Carer Survey, revealing Australia’s 3 million family and friend carers are experiencing widespread financial stress and low recognition, putting their ability to keep caring at risk.

The 2024 National Carer Survey provides detailed insight into the experiences of Australia’s family and friend carers. It highlights two critical issues: the rising cost of living and the ongoing gap in recognition and support for carers.

Over 10,000 carers from across the country responded to the survey, with strong representation from young carers, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander carers, culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) carers, and sexuality and gender diverse carers.

The 2024 National Carer Survey received 640 responses from Tasmanian carers, with the State recording both the oldest respondents on average and the highest male participation rate nationally.

Dr Samantha Fox, CEO of Carers Tasmania, said the findings from the 2024 National Carer Survey paint a stark picture of the challenges faced by unpaid carers.

“These results confirm what we are hearing every day—many Tasmanian carers are struggling, often going without essentials like food or access to healthcare, while continuing to provide vital care for their loved ones,” said Dr Fox.

“It’s deeply concerning, and it highlights how urgently more support is needed.”
